Opening for Westside Regional Center’s Self-Determination Local Advisory Committee
The Westside Regional Center’s Self-Determination Local Advisory Committee has two openings: one appointed by the State Council on Developmental Disabilities and one appointed by the Westside Regional Center.
If you would like to be considered for an appointment by Westside Regional Center, please send an email to Cesar Garcia and copy Judy Mark, telling us why you would like to serve on the committee and what your experience has been. We are particularly interested in individuals who have been attending our committee meetings regularly. Here are our emails:

This meeting that is held on the second Tuesday of each month at Westside Regional Center from 6:00-8:00 pm, except for the month of August 2019. The committee shall consist of the regional center client’s rights advocate, consumers, family members, and other advocates and community leaders. A majority of the committee shall be consumers and their family members. The committee shall reflect the multicultural diversity and geographic profile of the catchment area. The committee shall review the development and ongoing progress of the Self Determination Program, including whether the program advances the principles of self determination and is operating consistent with the requirements of this section, and may make ongoing recommendations for improvement to the regional center and the department. All are welcome to attend these meetings.

July 19 – Statewide Self-Determination Advisory Committee convened by the State Council on Developmental Disabilities in Sacramento/Testing of orientation
July 20-August 31 – Local committees provide feedback to DDS on orientation
September 17 – Final date to send in names for SD lottery
October 1 – Random selection (lottery) of 2,500 names for phase-in of SDP
Month of October – DDS conducts train the trainer sessions for regional centers and local advisory committees
November onward – Orientations, participants begin self-determination

After several years of waiting for self-determination to get off the ground, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has approved the Medicaid waiver that was required to implement the program. The Department of Developmental Services and regional centers across the state are gearing up to implement the soft roll out of self-determination. While no specific dates have been given, the expectation is that DDS will finalize the orientation program for program participants by the end of the summer with regional centers offering this required curriculum in the fall to all who were selected in the first round.
The Los Angeles Office of the State Council will offer information and training on various aspects of self-determination throughout the summer. Training on person-centered planning and facilitation is June 16 in South Gate. The deadline to RSVP has been extended to Monday, June 11. Spanish interpretation will be provided.
