Summary:  Westside Regional Center (WRC) is seeking service providers who are interested in receiving training to become a Sexuality Educator for youth and adults with developmental disabilities and their families. On September 13th and 14th, 2018, WRC will be hosting sexuality education expert, Katherine McLaughlin, for a 2-day, in-person, train-the-trainer style workshop. The workshop will provide the skills and knowledge needed to become a sexuality educator for your agency.  Additionally, workshop participants will receive a copy of a comprehensive curriculum, handouts (in both English and Spanish), teaching tools, and a script to guide educators as they begin to facilitate their own groups.

Posting Date: 8/3/18

Application Process: Interested individuals and service providers should provide a one page letter of interest describing their interest in providing a sex education group, the type of group they plan to run (for parents, families, individuals, etc.), the names, titles and credentials of any individuals wishing to participate in the 2-day workshop in September. Additionally, please address your agency’s ability to provide sex education groups in Spanish. Individuals and service providers interested in participating must be able to pass a background check and should have a minimum of two years of experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Credentialed and licensed professionals are encouraged to apply.

Implication on Service Delivery: WRC receives frequent requests to provide sex education and support around building healthy relationships for adolescents and adults from WRC consumers and their families. To help address this need, agencies who participate in the workshop are expected to provide a program design for implementation of a sex education group within 30 days of completing the training. Upon completion of an approved sex education group service design, trained providers can become a vendored service provider to receive referrals to their groups.

Cost: There will be up to a $200 cost* for the training which covers the fee for the curriculum, English and Spanish handouts as well as admission into the full train-the-trainer course. Up to 5 participants per agency may attend Day 1 (Developmental Disabilities and Sexuality 101) and up to 3 per agency may attend Day 2 (Train-the-Trainer: Leading Sexuality Education Courses for People with DD). Anyone wishing to participate in Day 2 must attend both days. Agencies wishing to purchase more than one copy of the curriculum may purchase additional copies at up to $200 per copy.*

Deadline for Submission: Please submit your one page letter of interest to no later than Friday, August 17, 2018. Your application will be reviewed by the WRC Training Steering Committee and you will be informed of acceptance into the training by the end of August 2018.
